Somebody Please Help Me Pull Out This Ad

My husband and I travel via EDSA almost daily to go to work. Especially in the morning, as EDSA transforms into a big parking lot, it is inevitable for those who pass by to see all those commercial billboards scattered throughout EDSA.

I really don't mind being called prudish but there is this particular ad found between Guadalupe going to Estrella (just after San Carlos Seminary and Bahay Pari) that I'm hoping will be pulled out soon (or put down, for that matter).

The ad is by Jag and the model is Angel Locsin. It seems that Angel has agreed to move out of the angelic image and into a more daring (mature?) look. What impression does Angel want to potray in that kind of pose? She's already revealing most of her "hinaharap". It's not the same sweet girl impression that she exudes when she's talking during interviews. Or maybe Jag is trying to be a local version of Guess USA with its ads filled with models clad in very revealing and skimpy outfits. Hmmm...maybe.

Anyway, I just want to say that as a wife and mother, I think we deserve better ads from these sellers. I believe that they can be more creative than that. Ads can still gather attention and a following in another (but more wholesome) way given the right marketing strategy.

Please help me put down this ad because everytime I see this picture, I am bothered. As parents, we want to raise our children properly. We want our children to realize that our bodies are gifts from God and should be respected. I fear that if these kinds of ads continue to proliferate around Metro Manila, sooner or later, they will be adversely influenced which might lead them to think that that is the "in" way of dressing or that if you don't dress up like that, you're "manang" or outcasted. As a wife, I also don't want my dear husband to "enjoy" looking at those kinds of pictures. Men are very visual. Thus, any man passing by EDSA (including the priests and seminarians from San Carlos) can immediately lust over such ads.

So if any one of you know someone I can write to or call in order to persuade them to put down this ad or if you are the one responsible for this ad, please send me a comment.

Thanks a lot!

A pic of the ad from afar...

Sorry but I placed a ribbon to cover the part which is so disgustingly revealing...

duh?! are you trying to be a guardian of morality or what? why single out this particular when there are other ads along edsa, or any road for that matter, which are far more sensual than this one?

hi anonymous,
nope, i am not a guardian of morality or something. i am just a simple mother and this is my blog (where i can say whatever i want). in addition to what i said, i travel daily from edsa ortigas to buendia in makati. throughout that route, i think that this ad is by far the most sensual thing magnified through a billboard. i just think that this picture is more proper to be in a page of a men's magazine (which people have to pay for) and not fully-blown up like that for the indulgence of kids and adults alike. if you like the ad, then by all means i have no prob with that. i'm just saying that i don't like it.

Given that Angel is sexy and has a pretty face, advertising industry will capitalize on her assets whether it is the billboards along EDSA, print ads, mags or even on television because SEX SELLS. I think there are many Filipinos like who wants to uphold moral values and I don't find anything wrong with that. However, we must accept that time has changed and advertising industry is very powerful in creating images and recreate identity especially this time in the globalized economy when Western culture (ie. fashion) has accelerated in influencing other cultures through technology such as the internet. By having such billboard of Angel in that JAG ad on Edsa, that image that she portrays is a move from her teeny-boppy years into a more sensuous woman (as you said it) and with oozing sex appeal.

i agree with lluqui that times have really changed. as much as we would like to uphold our moral values but the influence of mass media is so strong. however, it is not fair to single out this jag ad of angel locsin because the degradation of moral values is not only apparent in those tv and print ads but even on those tagalog telenovelas which encourages hatred, vengeance, sex, violence, etc.

instead of making a fuss about that ad then i think what you can do is to either write to jag or to angel locsin which, i suppose, the latter will appreciate.
